ST. GEORGE – Viola Irene Hawkes, 81, year old passed away Tuesday, April 24, 2018 at Dixie Regional Hospital in St. George, Utah.
She was born April 23, 1937 in Paul, Idaho, the daughter of Gottlieb and Lydia Martsch.
She attended school in Paul and graduated from Paul High School. She was in Pep Club and loved singing in the school choir. She loved reading and if you needed a good book you could ask Viola and she would tell you her favorites. She loved to play the piano and the organ.
On September 7, 1955 she married Glen Erickson Hawkes in Paul, Minidoka County, Idaho. They were later sealed in the Logan, Utah Temple.
Viola enjoyed working on the farm with Glen and raising four children where she had a big yard and garden. She loved flower’s she loved square dancing, camping in the summers in Claridon, Sun Valley. She loved traveling in their 5th wheel trailer all across the country. Viola & Glen paled around all their lives with Dennis and Faye Dixon, Glens best friend and sister. Family was very important to her. Viola and Glen lived in Hawaii for over 21 years, which they enjoyed so much. But her biggest love was family history and working in the genealogy library and church library for many years. She moved to St. George, Utah in Sept. 2015. She was very active in her ward and enjoyed the many wonderful members there. She was spunky, full of life, loved to eat out and will be greatly missed.
Viola was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; she served two full time couple missions to St. Thomas U.S. Virgin Islands and Nauvoo, Ill, where she worked in many of the sites.
Viola is survived by her children Stanton Glen Hawkes of Salem, UT; Brent Ronald (Kathy) Hawkes of Paul, ID; Melanie (Winn) Oakey of Idaho Falls, ID; Bryon Gene Hawkes of St. George, UT; She has 9 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
She is proceeded in death by her parents; husband Glen, daughter Melinda; brothers John (Alla), Paul (Sarah), Rheinhold (Lena), Rudolph (Sarah), Joseph (Leah), Theodore (Betty), August (Velma), Sgt. William, Benjamin (Elsie), and baby brother Herbert; Sisters Leah (Oliver) Ludwig and Hulda (Steve) Weber; daughter-in-law Kim (Stanton) Hawkes.
Viewing services will be conducted from 10-11 am on Saturday, April 28, 2018 at the Serenity Funeral Home in St. George Utah for friends and family to pay their respects.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 5, 2018 at the Paul LDS Stake Center. Burial will follow after services in the Paul Cemetery. Friends may call Friday evening, May 4 at the Hansen Mortuary, Rupert Idaho Chapel from 6:00 until 8:00pm, and at the Paul church Saturday morning from 9:30 until 10:30am. Services are under the direction of Joel Heward Hansen Mortuary.
