Susan Kay James

Aug. 20, 1940 - Apr. 8, 2018

Date of Service: Apr. 13, 2018

Susan Kay James, 77, of Burley, Idaho, passed from this life and into her Savior’s arms on Sunday, April 8, 2018, shortly after attending church, due to an inoperable ruptured aortic aneurysm. Thankfully, family members were by her side.

Sue was born in Rupert, Idaho, on August 20, 1940, to Charles and Lydia Van Ryper, known beekeepers and honey producers in the Southern Idaho area. She attended and graduated from De Anza High School in Richmond, CA, as the Van Rypers’ had moved their family there before returning to Idaho in 1959.

She met Robert James in Richmond, CA and on June 27, 1959 they married and they had two children together. In 1968, the James family moved to Rupert, ID to raise their family in a more rural community setting.

Sue had a long-standing career in the Grocery industry and held various positions at both Safeway and Ridley’s chains in Rupert. She had a number of hobbies including elaborate needlepoint work and crocheting afghans. Sue also enjoyed fishing and playing card games, visiting the senior center, and loved watching old westerns and Hallmark movies.

Sue is survived by her two loving children, Bob (Karen) James of Seattle, WA; Brenda (Roger) James-Hansen of Burley, ID; four dear grandchildren, Bobby James of Goodlettesville, TN; Brandon James of Portland, TN; Austin Bailes of Burley, ID; and Alyssa Bailes of Salt Lake City, UT. Sue was also able to meet her great-grandchildren, Lucas and Luna, during a trip to Tennessee last year.

Services will be held at Hansen Mortuary, 710 6th Street, Rupert, ID at 11:00am on Friday, April 13, 2018, with Pastor Mike Yost presiding. A viewing for family and friends will be from 6-8pm, Thursday evening and one hour prior to the Friday service at the Hansen Mortuary as well.

Sue loved the Rupert Senior Center dearly. Donations may be sent there to continue their great service at Minidoka County Senior Center, 702 11th St, Rupert, ID 83350.
