Jan Dean

Feb. 6, 1956 - Aug. 6, 2017

Date of Service: Aug. 11, 2017

Janet Ruth Feil Dean, 61, of Burley, Idaho, passed peacefully from this life into heaven on August 6, 2017, while at home surrounded by her family. Jan was born on February 6, 1956, in White Swan, Washington, to Thomas B. “Bert” and Mary M. Feil. That same year the family moved to Rupert, Idaho, where Bert drew a 160-acre farm on the north side of Rupert under the Homestead Act. Jan grew up on the family farm, setting water and hoeing sugar beets, and graduated from Minico High School in 1974. She married Ken Patterson that same year and together they had three beautiful children: Bryan, Jacobi and Arika.

Jan loved life, and she loved Jesus. She was a long-time member of the Rupert First Christian Church, serving in many ministries, including as a deaconess, wedding coordinator, and on the board of the church’s daycare. She found great joy planning weddings and delighted in children of all ages, especially babies, and eventually served as the director of the daycare founded by the church. In recent years Jan attended Grace Community Church in Rupert.

In 1989, Jan met and married the love of her life, Wendel Dean, and for the next 28 years they built a wonderful life together with their six children and ten grandchildren. Jan always and only wanted to be a wife, mom and grandma. Nothing else was more important to her than that. She cherished Wendel, her children and grandchildren, and devoted her life to loving them.

Jan never knew a stranger. Regardless of who they were, she loved and welcomed every person who crossed her path. Jan lavished kindness and hospitality on her family, and also on the weakest and least among us - those who were hurting or struggling with some trial. She made each person whose life she touched feel as if they were precious and important. Jan enjoyed traveling with Wendel, spending time at their cabin in McCall, entertaining, and making her home, yard and flowers beautiful. But most of all, Jan treasured time spent with her family, especially her grandkids.

In 2015, Jan was diagnosed with cancer. Shortly after her diagnosis, she told her family that the Lord had given her the word “surrender.” She would fight this terrible disease, but she would do so in total surrender to God’s will for her life, come what may. Jan surrendered to the process of surgery, chemotherapy, radical dietary changes, and allowing her family to care for her, just as she had for them all these years. Following treatment, she enjoyed several months of remission before the cancer returned this past spring.

This time, Jan shared that God told her to find joy in everything. And she did. In the cheerful chatter and laughter of her home which was frequently filled with her kids and grandkids. In the tender care and compassion of her husband, family, nurses, friends, and church family. In every card, call, text and visit she received, God gave and Jan chose to receive, joy in the journey until the day he called her home.
Preceding Jan in death were her parents, Bert and Mary Feil, and her older brother, David Thomas Feil. She is survived by her husband, Wendel Dean of Burley; by her children, Bryan Patterson of Twin Falls, Jacobi Patterson of Boise, and Arika Patterson Phipps (Ryan) of Burley; her step-children, Mike Dean (Becky) of Jerome; Melanie Edwards (Richard “Spot”) of Casa Grande, Arizona, and Wendy Kerfoot (Kevin), of Caldwell; ten grandchildren, Gabe, Derek, Lukah, Khyauna, Kelt, Mikiah, Kayb, Jhett, Will and Kyro; two great grandchildren; her sister, Sue Feil-Erwin (Jeff) and brother, Dan Feil (Elise); sister-in-law, Marilyn Gleed (Dennis); and nephews and nieces Alyssa, Justin, Jarod, Sarah, Ben, Matt, Owen and Sophia.
A celebration of Jan’s life will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 11, 2017 at Grace Community Church in Rupert, Idaho, services will conclude with Graveside services in the Rupert Cemetery under the direction of Joel Heward Hansen Mortuary.
The family would like to thank the medical staff at St. Luke’s Magic Valley Medical Center and Mountain States Tumor Institute for their compassion and kindness.
